AI Overviews are the generated summaries Google shows above some results, with links to sources. AI Mode is a conversational search experience built on the same idea. Both draw on Google's index, and Google states there is no special markup or file needed to appear: the same eligibility as normal search applies.
That makes them less mysterious than they look. If a page is indexed, eligible for a snippet and a strong answer to the question, it can be linked.
Short on time? Comppound does this work for SaaS companies. AI-native, and a person reviews every page.
Have us do itWhat Google says is required
Google's guidance for AI features is short: the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and the usual technical requirements and spam policies apply. There is no separate submission. Blocking snippets with nosnippet or max-snippet also limits use in AI features.
Which searches trigger them
AI Overviews appear mostly on informational and complex questions, less on navigational and some transactional searches. Check your own target searches regularly, because coverage changes. Note which of your pages, and which competitors, are linked.
Comppound can do this for you
Want to be named in AI answers?
Comppound checks what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features say about your category, opens your site to their crawlers and builds the pages and mentions they cite. AI-native, with every page reviewed by a person.
- AI visibility baseline for your buyer questions
- Crawler access and quotable pages
- Monthly tracking of where you are named

How to be a linked source
Pages linked from AI Overviews tend to be the ones that already answer the question well. In practice:
- Answer the question directly near the top of the page
- Cover the related questions people ask next on the same page
- Use clear headings so each part can be lifted on its own
- Keep facts current and dated
- Make sure the page ranks reasonably for the underlying search
Measure the effect honestly
Search Console includes AI feature traffic in its normal Performance data rather than reporting it separately. Watch click-through rate on searches where an Overview appears: impressions can hold while clicks fall, which is a reason to make sure the clicks you do win land on pages that convert.
Worked example · an illustration, not a client result
Tallyroom's AI Overview check
Tallyroom checked its twenty target searches. Overviews appeared on most of the how-to searches and few of the comparison searches.
| Search | Overview? | Tallyroom linked? | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| how to track billable hours | Yes | No | Move the answer to the top; add follow-up questions |
| how to invoice a retainer | Yes | Yes | Keep current |
| tallyroom vs timewell | No | n/a | None |

Common mistakes
Looking for a special tag
Google says no special markup or file is needed for AI features.
Blocking snippets
nosnippet and tight max-snippet settings also limit how a page can appear in AI features.
Only counting clicks
Being linked in an Overview builds awareness even when the click goes elsewhere.

Questions
Snippet controls such as nosnippet limit how content is used, but they also affect normal results. Weigh it carefully.
Google says it is not required. It still helps Google understand pages and keep facts consistent.
