A visibility index is a single score, calculated by an SEO tool, that summarizes how visible a domain is in organic search. The tool checks rankings for a large, fixed set of keywords, weights each ranking by position and search volume, and adds the results. Several vendors publish their own version, and each uses a different keyword set and formula. It is useful for spotting trends, comparing competitors and seeing the effect of major updates, but it is an estimate, not a traffic figure.
Two flavors
Market-wide visibility indexes use the vendor's own large keyword database, so they can be compared across any domain the tool knows. Project visibility scores use your own tracked keywords, which makes them more relevant to your business but only comparable within your project.
- Market-wide: vendor keyword set, good for competitor and update comparisons
- Project-level: your keyword set, good for tracking your own strategy
How to read it
Look at the direction and the timing. A drop that lines up with a confirmed Google update, a site migration or a big content change is a lead worth investigating. A slow decline may indicate content decay or rising competition. Always confirm with Search Console clicks and impressions, since the index can move without any change in your real traffic, and the reverse.
Limits
Market-wide indexes depend on which keywords the vendor tracks. A B2B SaaS site that ranks for many small, specific queries may look less visible than it is. The weighting usually ignores SERP features and AI answers that change real click opportunity.
Example
Spotting a migration problem
Imagine Moorcastle, a fictional e-learning platform, sees its visibility index fall sharply the week after moving its blog to a new subdomain. Search Console confirms impressions dropped for blog URLs.
A crawl finds that hundreds of old posts redirect to the blog homepage instead of their new URLs. Fixing the redirect map is the first step.
Common mistakes
Reporting it as traffic
A visibility index is a modeled score. Do not present it as visits or clicks.
Mixing tools
Indexes from different vendors use different formulas and keyword sets. Pick one and stay with it for trends.
Questions
The index may weight keywords that send you little real traffic, or your real traffic may come from queries the tool does not track. Search Console is the more reliable record of your own performance.
