Keyword Tracking

Keyword tracking is monitoring where your pages rank for chosen searches over time, using Search Console data, rank tracking tools or both.

Also called: Rank tracking, Position tracking, Keyword monitoring

Keyword tracking is the ongoing measurement of how your site ranks for a set of searches. It shows whether new pages are gaining ground, whether updates helped, and whether competitors are overtaking you. The two main data sources are Google Search Console, which reports real impressions and average position from Google, and third-party rank trackers, which check results on a schedule from a chosen location and device.

Search Console vs rank trackers

Search Console's average position is based on actual searches where your site appeared, across all locations and devices, and averaged. It is real data but blended. Rank trackers run fixed checks, for example daily from one city on mobile, and report a single position. They are consistent and can track competitors, but they reflect one simulated search, not your audience.

Most teams use both: Search Console for truth about their own traffic, a tracker for competitive and trend views on priority keywords.

What to track

Track a focused set, grouped so the data is meaningful. Tag keywords by product area, intent and page so you can see trends by group instead of staring at thousands of individual lines.

  • Priority commercial and transactional keywords
  • The primary keyword of each important page
  • Branded keywords, to catch misranking pages
  • Competitor head-to-head and alternative searches
  • A sample of informational keywords per topic cluster

Reading the data

Focus on trends over weeks, not daily moves. Pair rankings with clicks and conversions: a position gain that brings no extra clicks may sit below an AI Overview or ads. When positions drop, check SERP volatility and the results page before assuming your page got worse.

Example

A tracking set for a new product line

Imagine Ivorycliff, a fictional billing platform, launches a usage-based billing feature. It sets up tracking for thirty keywords tagged “usage billing”, including the primary keywords of its new pages and three competitor comparisons.

Weekly reports show the group's average position and clicks, which the team reviews alongside demo requests from those pages.

Common mistakes

Tracking everything

Thousands of untagged keywords produce noise. A smaller, grouped set is easier to act on.

Reporting rank without clicks

Positions alone can mislead, especially on crowded results pages. Report rankings with traffic and outcomes.

Questions

They measure different things. A tracker reports one simulated search; Search Console averages real searches across locations, devices and personalization.
