Voice Search

Voice search is searching by speaking to a device or assistant. Answers are often read aloud, so a single source may be used instead of a list of links.

Also called: Voice assistants, Spoken search

Voice search covers spoken queries to phones, smart speakers, cars and AI assistants. Older voice assistants mostly read out a featured snippet or a single result. Newer AI assistants with voice modes, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and others, hold spoken conversations and can search the web as they talk. For B2B SaaS, voice is rarely a primary research channel, but the same answer-first content serves both voice and text assistants.

How voice answers are formed

A spoken answer has no room for ten blue links. The assistant either picks one source and reads from it, or composes a short answer from several. Either way, it favors concise, plainly worded passages. Citations may be mentioned briefly or shown on screen afterward, which reduces clicks compared with text results.

The voice assistant landscape has been shifting as companies replace older assistants with LLM-based ones. Product behavior changes often and is not well documented, so test the assistants your audience uses.

Practical steps

There is little that is specific to voice beyond good answer-focused content and solid local and technical basics.

  • Answer common questions in a sentence or two, in natural language.
  • Use question-style headings that match how people speak.
  • Keep business information consistent where local queries matter.
  • Make pages fast and mobile-friendly, since voice queries often come from phones.

Example

A spoken how-to

A user asks a phone assistant 'how do I export my contacts from Marrowgate?'. The assistant reads a short answer from Marrowgate's help article, which starts with a two-sentence summary of the steps before the detailed walkthrough. A competitor's article opens with a long introduction and the assistant uses a third-party forum post instead.

Common mistakes

Building separate 'voice search pages'

Voice and text assistants draw on the same content. Write good answers once.

Relying on outdated voice statistics

Many widely repeated voice search figures are old predictions with unclear sources. Base decisions on your own audience.

Google's speakable structured data has long been in beta with limited support. Check current Search Central documentation before investing in it.

Usually less than for local and consumer searches. The answer-first content that serves voice also serves text-based AI assistants, which matter more for most SaaS buyers.
