A rank tracker is software that runs searches for a list of keywords at set intervals and records the positions of your pages and your competitors'. Good trackers let you set the country, city, language and device, store snapshots of the results page, and show which SERP features appear. They complement Search Console by providing consistent, controlled measurements and competitive data that Google does not supply.
Features worth having
Rank trackers vary a lot in what they record. These features make the data much more useful for SaaS teams.
- Location and device settings matching your market
- Competitor tracking on the same keyword set
- SERP feature tracking, including AI Overviews where supported
- Saved SERP snapshots for later comparison
- Tags and groups for product areas and intent
- Share of voice or visibility metrics across the set
How trackers collect data
Trackers send automated queries to search engines or buy results data from providers that do. Google's terms of service restrict automated querying, and the way providers collect results is often not disclosed in detail. In September 2025 Google stopped honoring the parameter that let one request return a hundred results, which raised costs for trackers and led some to change how deep they track. Check how deep your tracker reports and how it handles AI features.
Limits
A tracker reports one simulated search. Real users see personalized and localized results, and AI answers can change from one search to the next. Treat tracked positions as a consistent indicator of trend, and use Search Console for what actually happened with your traffic.
Example
Local tracking for a regional launch
Imagine Ashgrove, a fictional workforce app, expands from the US into Germany. It sets up a separate tracking project for German keywords, located in Berlin on mobile, with three local competitors added.
The saved snapshots show that German results lean more toward review directories than US results do, which shapes the launch content.
Common mistakes
Tracking the wrong location
A tracker set to the default country may not reflect your buyers. Match the market you sell into.
Comparing data across tools
Different trackers collect results differently and may disagree. Stick with one source for trend lines.
Questions
Not always. Search Console covers your own performance well. A tracker adds competitor data, fixed-location checks and SERP feature history, which matter more as a program grows.
