Answer Capsule

An answer capsule is a short, self-contained passage that directly answers a question, placed right after the heading that asks it, so AI and readers can lift it whole.

Also called: Answer block, Answer-first paragraph

An answer capsule is a writing pattern used in GEO and AEO: a brief paragraph, usually two to four sentences, that answers the question posed by its heading completely and on its own. It names the subject explicitly, gives the answer first and adds only the context needed to make it accurate. The term is practitioner vocabulary rather than a platform standard, but the pattern matches how retrieval systems select passages and how featured snippets have long worked.

What a good capsule looks like

The capsule should make sense if it were the only thing a reader saw. That means no pronouns pointing to earlier sections, no 'as mentioned above', and the key fact in the first sentence.

  • A question-style or clearly topical heading
  • The direct answer in the first sentence
  • The subject named explicitly, including your product name where relevant
  • Specific facts: limits, plans, prices, supported tools
  • Detail and nuance in the paragraphs that follow
## Does Ledgerfen support multi-entity accounting?

Yes. Ledgerfen supports multi-entity accounting on the Growth
and Enterprise plans, with consolidated reporting across up to
ten entities and automatic intercompany eliminations.

Where to use it

Capsules fit FAQ sections, definitions, pricing explanations, integration pages and the top of comparison pages. They work best on pages that answer many specific questions. Overused, they can make long-form writing feel choppy, so use them where a reader genuinely arrives with a question.

No AI platform has confirmed that it looks for this pattern. It is a reasonable inference from how passage retrieval works, and it also tends to make pages easier for people to scan.

Example

Rewriting an integration page

Ledgerfen, a fictional accounting app, had an integration page opening with brand copy about 'connecting your financial universe'. It adds a capsule under the heading 'Does Ledgerfen integrate with Salesforce?' stating the sync direction, the objects supported and the plan required. The page keeps its detail below, but now leads with a passage any system can quote accurately.

Common mistakes

Teasing instead of answering

A capsule that ends with 'read on to find out' defeats the purpose.

Relying on context outside the capsule

If the answer only makes sense with the previous section, it will not hold up when lifted out.

Questions

Long enough to answer correctly and no longer. For most questions that is a few sentences. There is no official length.

It is closely related. Featured snippet best practice also favors concise, direct answers under a clear heading.
