Podcast Advertising

Podcast advertising is paying for ad spots in podcast episodes, often read by the host, to reach a niche audience that trusts the show.

Also called: podcast sponsorship, podcast ads, host-read ads

Podcast advertising means buying spots in podcast episodes: pre-roll before the content, mid-roll in the middle, or post-roll at the end. Ads can be read by the host, produced by you, baked into the episode permanently or inserted dynamically per listener. For B2B SaaS, niche industry podcasts can reach a concentrated audience of practitioners and decision-makers.

Ways to buy

  • Host-read sponsorship: the host reads or improvises your message, usually the most trusted format.
  • Baked-in ads: recorded into the episode and heard by anyone who downloads it, including later listeners.
  • Dynamically inserted ads: placed at download time, so they can be targeted and swapped.
  • Programmatic audio: buying across many shows by audience rather than by show.

Measuring results

Listeners rarely click; they hear and later search or type your URL. Common methods are a vanity URL or promo code, a “how did you hear about us” field on sign-up and demo forms, and watching branded search and direct traffic around air dates. Some podcast hosting platforms offer pixel-based attribution that links downloads to site visits, with limits on accuracy.

Choosing shows

Ask hosts for audience details: listener roles, geography, typical downloads per episode within a set time, and how other sponsors have done. Download figures are not standardized across every host, although many follow IAB podcast measurement guidelines. Listen to several episodes to judge fit and how the host handles sponsors.

Example

A niche show test

Hypothetical company Ferncastle sells software for veterinary clinics. It sponsors a podcast for practice managers for six episodes, with host-read mid-rolls and a short vanity URL. Demo forms gain a “Podcast” option, and the team compares demo requests mentioning the show with the sponsorship cost.

Common mistakes

Judging after one episode

Podcast audiences often need to hear a message several times. Plan a run of episodes before deciding.

Not if it is unpaid, though it serves a similar distribution purpose. If you pay for the appearance, disclose it.
