Paid, Owned and Earned Media

Paid, owned and earned media sorts channels by who controls them: ads you buy, channels you own like your site and list, and coverage others give you.

Also called: owned vs earned vs paid media, POEM, PESO model

Paid, owned and earned media is a simple way to group marketing channels. Paid media is attention you buy, such as ads and sponsorships. Owned media is channels you control, like your website, blog, email list and product. Earned media is attention others give you: press coverage, reviews, word of mouth, social shares and mentions in AI answers. Some versions add shared media (social) as a fourth category, known as the PESO model.

How the three differ

  • Paid: fast and controllable, but stops when spending stops, and audiences discount it as advertising.
  • Owned: you control the message and keep the asset, but you must build the audience yourself.
  • Earned: the most credible to buyers, but you cannot control what is said or when.

How they work together

The categories feed each other. Owned content that is genuinely useful earns links and mentions. Paid distribution can put owned content in front of people who might share or cite it. Earned coverage sends traffic to owned pages and builds the brand searches that make paid search cheaper.

Organic search sits mostly in owned media (your pages) but depends on earned signals (links, mentions). Visibility in AI answers similarly depends on what is published about you on other sites as well as your own.

Planning with the model

Use it to check balance. A SaaS company with only paid media has growth that is rented; one with only owned media may grow too slowly. Ask for each initiative which category it builds, and whether it compounds over time.

Example

One research report, three kinds of media

Hypothetical company Quillmere publishes original survey findings on its own site (owned), pitches them to industry journalists (earned) and promotes them with LinkedIn ads to target accounts (paid). It tracks links and mentions earned alongside the leads the paid campaign produced.

Common mistakes

Counting paid placements as earned

Sponsored articles and paid reviews are paid media, even when they look editorial. Label and measure them that way.

Your posts are usually counted as owned or shared media, boosted posts as paid, and other people’s shares or mentions as earned.
