Email Marketing

Email marketing is sending planned messages to people who opted in, from newsletters to onboarding and nurture sequences, to build and keep customers.

Also called: lifecycle email, email campaigns

Email marketing covers every planned message you send to a list of people who have agreed to hear from you: newsletters, product updates, onboarding, nurture sequences, webinar invitations and win-back emails. For SaaS it is one of the main owned channels, because you control the list and the timing, and it connects directly to product usage data.

Types of email in SaaS

  • Broadcasts: newsletters, announcements and event invitations sent to a segment at once.
  • Lifecycle or triggered emails: sent when someone does something, such as signing up or hitting a usage milestone.
  • Nurture sequences: series that move leads toward a sales conversation.
  • Transactional emails: receipts, password resets and alerts, which follow different rules and should not carry heavy marketing.

Foundations

Emails only work if they arrive. That means authenticating your sending domain (SPF, DKIM and DMARC), keeping lists clean, honoring unsubscribes quickly and watching spam complaints. Gmail and Yahoo tightened requirements for bulk senders in 2024, and Microsoft followed for Outlook consumer addresses in 2025.

Consent rules differ by region: CAN-SPAM in the US, CASL in Canada, and the GDPR and ePrivacy rules in the EU and UK. Collect consent clearly and keep records.

What to measure

Opens have become unreliable because of Apple Mail Privacy Protection and image proxies. Clicks, replies, conversions and downstream product or pipeline outcomes are better guides, along with deliverability signals like bounce and complaint rates.

Example

From newsletter to pipeline

Hypothetical company Larchwood sends a fortnightly newsletter with practical guides and one product tip. Readers who click a pricing or integration link are added to a short sequence offering a walkthrough, and the team tracks how many meetings that sequence books.

Common mistakes

Buying lists

Purchased lists damage sender reputation and often break consent laws. Build your own.

Questions

No, but they help each other: email brings readers back to content, and search brings new subscribers to your list.
