A brand mention is any place your company or product is named outside your own site: in an article, a review, a Reddit thread, a podcast transcript or an AI-generated answer. Mentions with a link are also backlinks; mentions without one are often called unlinked mentions. For AI search, mentions matter because language models learn which brands belong to which categories from the text they read, and AI search tools often build answers from third-party pages that name several products.
Why mentions matter for AI answers
When someone asks an AI assistant for the best tools in a category, the answer usually reflects which brands are repeatedly named alongside that category in sources the system trusts or retrieves. A product that appears in comparison articles, community discussions and review sites has more chances to be included than one that only describes itself on its own site.
No AI provider publishes how much weight mentions carry, and it surely varies by system. But the logic is simple: if an answer is assembled from third-party pages, you need to be on those pages.
Where SaaS mentions come from
- “Best [category] tools” articles and listicles.
- Software review sites and marketplaces.
- Reddit, community forums and Q&A sites.
- Integration partners' websites and app directories.
- Podcasts, webinars and conference talks that get transcribed.
- Customer case studies published by customers themselves.
- Industry news and analyst coverage.
How to earn them
Start with the sources AI tools already cite for your category. Run your buyer prompts, list the cited domains, and work through them: pitch listicle authors with accurate product information, keep review profiles current, and take part honestly in communities where your buyers ask questions.
Quality and accuracy matter more than volume. A mention that describes your product correctly in the right category is worth more than many that misdescribe it.
Example
A fictional onboarding tool
Guidepost, a made-up user onboarding tool, finds that answers to “best user onboarding software” cite four comparison articles and a Reddit thread. Guidepost appears in one of the articles. Over a quarter, the team contacts the other authors with a product summary and screenshots, answers questions in relevant threads with clear disclosure, and asks happy customers to post reviews on the two review sites that keep being cited.
Common mistakes
Astroturfing
Fake reviews and undisclosed promotional posts break platform rules and can get removed or banned. They also erode trust when spotted.
Tracking only linked mentions
Backlink tools miss unlinked mentions. Use a mention monitoring tool or regular searches to see the full picture.
Questions
Google has not confirmed that unlinked mentions are a ranking signal. They can still drive awareness, and they can be turned into links by asking politely.
Run a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and log which brands are named. Several commercial tools automate this, each with its own method.
