AI visibility describes a brand's presence in AI-generated answers: whether it is mentioned, whether it is cited, where it appears in the answer, and whether what is said about it is accurate. It is the outcome that Generative Engine Optimization aims to improve. For a SaaS company, the most important part is visibility on the prompts buyers use when choosing software.
The parts of AI visibility
Each part can move independently, so it helps to track them separately rather than as one score.
- Mentions: is your brand named in the answer?
- Citations: is one of your pages linked as a source?
- Position: are you recommended first, listed among many, or added as an afterthought?
- Accuracy: is the description of your product, pricing and fit correct?
- Sentiment: is the framing neutral, positive or negative?
How to measure it
Pick a prompt set based on real buyer questions: category, alternatives, comparisons, integrations and problems your product solves. Run them across the AI tools your buyers use, more than once, on a regular schedule. Record the five parts above for your brand and your main competitors.
Add the signals you can see in your own data: referral traffic from AI domains in analytics, AI Overview and AI Mode impressions folded into Search Console, branded search trends, and self-reported attribution on sign-up forms. None of these is complete on its own.
What moves it
There is no switch. The levers are the ones covered across this glossary: pages that AI search crawlers can fetch, clear answers to specific questions, consistent entity information, current facts, and accurate mentions in the third-party sources AI tools draw on. Results vary by tool and change over time, so expect to work on trends rather than fixed positions.
Example
A fictional baseline audit
Notewell, a made-up meeting notes app, runs its first AI visibility check: 30 prompts, four tools, three runs each. It is mentioned on most integration prompts, rarely on category prompts, and two tools describe a pricing plan it retired. The team fixes the outdated plan references first, since accuracy problems are quickest to address, then plans off-site work for category prompts.
Common mistakes
Chasing one score
A single visibility number hides whether the problem is mentions, citations or accuracy. Break it down.
Ignoring accuracy
Being mentioned with the wrong price or the wrong category can cost deals. Check what is said, not just whether you appear.
Questions
AI visibility is the broad measure of your presence and accuracy in AI answers. AI share of voice is one metric within it that compares your mentions with competitors'.
Partly. AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the Web search type but not separated. Other AI tools are not covered by Search Console at all.
Monthly is a common rhythm for a fixed prompt set, with spot checks after major launches or pricing changes.
