AI Citation

An AI citation is a link or source reference that an AI search tool shows beside its answer to point to the page it drew on.

An AI citation is a reference to a source shown in an AI-generated answer, usually as a numbered footnote, a link card or a source list. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude with web search, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all show citations in some form. A citation is different from a mention: an answer can name your brand without linking to you, or link to your page without naming you.

Citations versus mentions

A mention is your brand or product named in the answer text. A citation is your page listed as a source. Both matter, for different reasons. Mentions shape what the buyer remembers and puts on a shortlist. Citations can send a visit and signal that your page was trusted enough to support a claim.

For many category questions, the cited sources are third-party pages, such as review sites, listicles and forums, while vendors appear only as mentions. Tracking both separately gives a truer picture.

How sources tend to get chosen

No AI search provider publishes its source selection logic. In general, systems that browse the web run one or more searches, retrieve candidate pages, read passages and keep the ones that support the answer. That suggests a few things to check, without promising any outcome.

  • Is the page crawlable by the relevant search crawler, such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot?
  • Does it rank, or at least appear, for the searches the system is likely to run?
  • Does a passage answer the question directly, with a specific claim the answer can lean on?
  • Is the information current, with a visible date where freshness matters?

Tracking citations

Citations vary by session, location, account and model version. The practical approach is to keep a fixed list of prompts, run them on a schedule, and log which domains are cited and which brands are mentioned. Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains in your analytics shows the clicks that do happen, though some AI apps strip referrers, so those numbers are a floor.

Example

A fictional invoicing tool

Billwise, a made-up invoicing product, runs 40 buyer prompts each month across three AI tools. For “how to set late payment fees on invoices”, its help article is cited often. For “best invoicing software for agencies”, it is mentioned sometimes but never cited; the sources are two review sites. The team decides the help article is fine and spends effort on getting reviewed on the sites that are being cited.

Common mistakes

Counting every link as a win

A citation buried in a long source list may send no traffic. Look at whether your brand is named in the answer too.

Ignoring the sources that are cited instead

The domains cited for your category tell you where to earn mentions. Treat them as a target list.

Questions

Citation links in AI answers are shown in the AI product's interface, not on a web page that search engines crawl, so they are not backlinks in the usual sense.

Answers are generated fresh and the retrieval step can return different pages each time. Some variation is normal; look at trends across many runs.
