Ranking on Google, absent from ChatGPT
A buyer asks an AI assistant for the best tool in your category and gets four names. Yours is not one of them, even though you outrank two of the four on Google.
Ranking and being cited are related but different. This is the work of closing that gap, measured against a fixed set of buyer questions every month.
What buyers search
Teams missing from AI answersAnswer capsules on existing pages
The cheapest change with the most direct effect on whether a passage can be lifted.
The first 60 words under each heading, rewritten to answer the question outrightCategory and “best of” pages
The question buyers ask assistants most, and the answer that names products.

Specific, factual answers are what assistants look for and what vague vendor pages lack.

A claim that can be checked is a claim that can be cited.

What gets in the way
Where it usually goes wrong
Nobody is measuring it
There is no Search Console for AI answers, so most teams do not know whether they are named, for which questions, or beside whom.
Pages that rank but cannot be quoted
A page can rank on the strength of its domain and still bury its answer under an introduction no AI system will lift.
Your claims live only on your own site
AI answers lean on third-party sources. If nothing outside your domain describes what you do, there is little to cite.
Move the answer to the top
A page can rank and still bury its answer under an introduction no AI system will lift. The same page, restructured, puts the answer where it can be quoted.

After

An AI answer
Lifts the passage that answers the question outright, and names where it came from.

How it runs
From an opening to a published page
Every opening is recorded with what kind it is, the evidence behind it, a recommended action and an estimate of the clicks at stake, which sets its rank.
A baseline first
We agree a set of buyer questions with you and record who each AI product names for each one today, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews.
The answer names
- 1A competitor
- 2A review site
- 3Another competitor
- Your productNot named
The baseline records this for every question, on each AI surface. Illustrative.
Access, then structure, then substance
Crawler access and structured data are checked first because they are quick to fix. Then pages are restructured so the answer comes first, and claims are made specific and sourced.
Access
Can the crawlers read the site at all?
Structure
Is the answer first, in a passage that stands alone?
Substance
Are the claims specific and sourced?
Checked in this order, because the first is the quickest to fix.
The same questions every month
Citations are re-checked against the same question set monthly, so you can see movement and not a new set of numbers each time.
The same questions, re-asked
Named or notWe do not promise citations. This is what gets measured. Illustrative.
The searches, statuses and product names on this page are illustrations of what buyers search for. The companies named are not clients or partners of Comppound, and nothing here is client data.
Frequently asked questions
No. Nobody controls what an AI system says, and anyone who promises it is guessing. The work makes your pages easier to cite, and the result is measured against the same questions every month.
It builds on it. Google's AI Overviews mostly draw on pages that already rank, so ranking still comes first. The AI search work is included in the Compound and Exponential plans and can be added to Simple.
