Top of Funnel

The earliest stage of the buying journey, when people first become aware of a problem or topic, and the content and channels that reach them there.

Also called: TOFU, awareness stage, top-of-funnel content

Top of funnel refers to the awareness stage of a marketing funnel, where potential buyers first encounter a problem, an idea or a company. Top-of-funnel content is usually educational and broad, such as explainers, guides and industry news. It attracts the largest audience but the lowest immediate buying intent, so its value is measured over longer periods and through what it leads to.

What top-of-funnel content looks like

In search, top-of-funnel queries are typically informational. They often have higher search volume than commercial queries, and they are the queries most affected by AI overviews and other answers shown directly on the results page.

  • Definitions and explainers of concepts related to the product.
  • How-to guides for problems the product's buyers face.
  • Research, opinion and industry trends.
  • Templates and checklists that are useful on their own.

Measuring it honestly

Top-of-funnel content rarely produces a sale on the first visit, so last-click reports undervalue it. Better measures include returning visitors, newsletter sign-ups, assisted conversions, and whether readers later visit commercial pages. Even so, the connection is weaker than for bottom-of-funnel content, and it is reasonable to fund top-of-funnel work as a deliberate bet rather than claim precise returns.

Keeping it relevant

Broad content can attract an audience that will never buy. Choosing topics that the ideal customer profile actually searches for, and linking each piece to a relevant product page or middle-of-funnel resource, keeps top-of-funnel work connected to the business.

Example

A guide that leads somewhere

Hypothetical company Ravenspoke sells expense software. It publishes a guide on creating a company travel policy, aimed at finance managers at small companies. The guide includes a downloadable policy template and links to a page on automating policy checks. The team measures template downloads and later visits to that page rather than expecting direct sign-ups.

Common mistakes

Chasing volume outside your market

High-volume topics that your buyers never search for build traffic without pipeline. Filter topics by audience fit.

Judging it on last-click revenue

This will nearly always make top-of-funnel content look worthless. Use measures suited to its role.

Questions

Usually not first. Most companies get faster results from bottom-of-funnel pages such as comparisons and integrations, then expand upward.
