Performance Max (PMax) is a goal-based Google Ads campaign. You supply conversion goals, a budget, creative assets and optional audience signals, and Google decides where to show ads, to whom and at what bid across its inventory. It launched in 2021 and has become Google’s recommended campaign type for many advertisers, though it gives up much of the control that search-only campaigns offer.
How it works
You build asset groups containing headlines, descriptions, images, videos and a final URL. Audience signals, such as your customer lists or website visitors, are hints for where to start rather than hard targeting. Smart Bidding then optimizes toward your chosen conversions or conversion value.
PMax can also show on search results. Where an exact match search keyword in a standard search campaign matches the query, Google says the search campaign is generally preferred; otherwise PMax may compete for the same queries.
Concerns for B2B SaaS
- Low conversion volume gives the automation little to learn from.
- Form-fill goals invite spam and low-quality leads unless you import qualified stages.
- Spend can drift to brand searches or retargeting that would have converted anyway.
- Reporting is less detailed than standard campaigns, though Google has added channel, search term and asset reporting over time.
Making it work
Teams that get value from PMax tend to optimize toward qualified-lead or opportunity conversions imported from the CRM, exclude brand terms where Google allows, add negative keywords, and judge results against holdout or incrementality tests rather than platform-reported conversions alone. Controls change often, so check current documentation before building.
Example
A controlled trial
Hypothetical company Thornquill launches PMax with a modest budget, optimizing only toward sales-accepted leads imported from its CRM, with brand exclusions on. It compares qualified pipeline per dollar against its search campaigns over a full quarter before deciding whether to scale.
Common mistakes
Optimizing toward raw form fills
The system will find the cheapest form fills it can, which are often the least qualified.
Questions
Google has added search term reporting and insights to PMax, but coverage has historically been less complete than in standard search campaigns. Check what your account currently shows.
