Looker Studio is a web-based tool for building dashboards and reports from many data sources. Google renamed it from Data Studio in 2022. It has native connectors for GA4, Search Console, Google Ads, BigQuery and Google Sheets, plus partner connectors for other tools. SEO teams use it to put search performance, analytics outcomes and goals in one shareable view.
Common SEO dashboards
A typical SEO dashboard combines several sources.
- Search Console: clicks, impressions, CTR and position by page and query
- GA4: organic sessions, engagement and key events by landing page
- BigQuery or Sheets: pipeline or revenue joined from the CRM
- Annotations or a change log for context
Limits and quotas
Looker Studio queries live APIs, so it inherits their limits. The GA4 connector is subject to GA4 API quotas, and busy dashboards can hit them, showing errors until the quota resets. Search Console's connector returns a limited number of rows per request. Large or heavily used reports are often moved onto BigQuery data, which avoids most API limits but adds query costs.
Blending lets you join sources on a shared field such as landing page, but joins are sensitive to formatting differences, such as trailing slashes or full URLs versus paths.
Looker Studio Pro
Google offers a paid Looker Studio Pro tier with team workspaces and admin controls. Looker, a separate Google Cloud product, is a different, enterprise BI platform despite the similar name.
Example
One page for the monthly review
Suppose Hazelstrand, a vendor risk SaaS, replaces a monthly slide deck with a Looker Studio report: Search Console clicks by content cluster, GA4 trial starts from organic landing pages, and a target line from a Sheet. The review now starts from the same numbers each month instead of screenshots.
Common mistakes
Joining on unnormalized URLs
Search Console returns full URLs; GA4 often returns paths. Normalize before blending.
Too many charts on one page
Each chart is a query. Heavy pages are slow and burn API quota.
Questions
The standard version is free. Some partner connectors and the Pro tier cost money, and BigQuery queries are billed separately.
