LinkedIn Ads

LinkedIn Ads is LinkedIn’s self-serve ad platform, valued in B2B for targeting by job title, function, seniority, company and industry at a premium price.

Also called: LinkedIn advertising, LinkedIn Campaign Manager

LinkedIn Ads, run through Campaign Manager, lets advertisers reach LinkedIn members by professional attributes rather than search queries or interests. For B2B SaaS it is often the most precise paid channel for reaching a buying committee, and also one of the more expensive per click and per thousand impressions.

Main formats

  • Sponsored Content: single image, video, carousel, event and document ads in the feed.
  • Thought Leader Ads: sponsored posts from people rather than the company page.
  • Lead Gen Forms: forms prefilled from the member’s profile, attached to ads.
  • Message Ads and Conversation Ads: sponsored messages in the inbox.
  • Text and dynamic ads on desktop, with smaller placements.

Targeting

You can target by company name, company size, industry, job title, job function, seniority, skills, groups and more, plus uploaded contact and company lists. Combining too many filters can shrink an audience below what the platform will serve efficiently, so start broader and narrow with data.

Audience expansion and LinkedIn Audience Network are often on by default. Decide whether you want them, since they can lower costs while widening who sees your ads.

Measuring it

LinkedIn buyers often see an ad, do nothing, and search for you weeks later. Platform click conversions undercount that, while view-through conversions can overcount it. Install the Insight Tag, use the Conversions API to send CRM outcomes, and compare against self-reported attribution and pipeline influenced by target accounts.

Example

Reaching a buying committee

Hypothetical company Gantrybell sells security software to mid-size companies. It uploads a list of target accounts and runs document ads with a practical audit checklist to IT leaders, and a cost-focused customer story to finance leaders at the same companies.

Common mistakes

Judging LinkedIn by cost per click

Clicks are pricey. The question is whether the right accounts engage and later enter pipeline.

Gating everything behind a form

Lead Gen Forms make sign-ups easy, which can mean many low-intent leads. Watch how they convert downstream.

Questions
