Link Context

Link context is the text and content around a link, which helps search engines and readers understand what the linked page is about.

Also called: Contextual link, Surrounding text

Link context is everything near a link that explains it: the sentence it sits in, the paragraph around it, the heading above it and the topic of the page. Google's link guidance says it uses anchor text and the words around a link to understand the destination. A contextual link is one placed inside relevant body content, as opposed to a list of links or a template element.

What Google says

Google's link best practices ask site owners to write anchor text that makes sense on its own and to consider the words around the link, because Google uses that text to learn about the linked page. That guidance is aimed at people writing links, but it applies equally when you look at how others link to you.

For more, click here.

Our guide to SOC 2 evidence collection lists
each control and the artifacts auditors usually ask for.

Why context helps you

A link inside a relevant explanation tells search engines what your page covers even when the anchor text is just your brand name. It also tells readers why they should click, which drives referral traffic. Links dropped into unrelated sentences, or lists of links with no explanation, give less of both.

Context in AI answers

AI search systems read the text around mentions and links when they build answers. How this affects citation in specific products is not documented in detail, but clear, accurate descriptions of your product in third-party content are likely to shape how those systems describe you.

Example

A tutorial mention

An illustrative feature flag platform, Togglebarn, is mentioned in a tutorial about safe deployments. The writer explains that the team used Togglebarn's percentage rollouts to release a change to a small group first, and links the product name. Even with a brand anchor, the context makes clear what Togglebarn does and for whom.

Common mistakes

Asking for keyword anchors instead of good context

Natural descriptions around a brand anchor carry meaning without creating an over-optimized anchor pattern.
