Free Trial Signup

A free trial signup is the step where a visitor starts a time-limited, no-cost trial of a paid product, with or without entering a credit card.

Also called: trial signup, free trial conversion

A free trial gives prospective customers access to a paid product for a set period, often with full or near-full features, before asking them to pay. The signup is the moment they commit to trying it. Key design decisions include trial length, whether a card is required up front, which features are included and what happens when the trial ends.

Card required or not

Asking for a credit card at signup filters out less serious visitors and can make conversion to paid more automatic, since billing starts when the trial ends unless cancelled. Not asking lowers the barrier, bringing in more trials, but more of them may never become customers. Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on price, sales motion and how quickly users see value.

If a card is required, say so before the signup form, explain when billing starts and make cancellation easy. Hidden auto-renewals and hard-to-cancel trials attract complaints and, in many places, legal scrutiny under automatic renewal and consumer protection laws.

Designing the signup page

The trial signup page should restate what the visitor gets, for how long, and what happens at the end.

  • Trial length and included features.
  • Whether a card is needed, stated near the button.
  • What happens at the end: downgrade, pause or billing.
  • A short form or single sign-on option.
  • Reassurance about data handling for B2B buyers.

Trial versus freemium

A trial is time-limited access to a paid plan. A freemium plan is free indefinitely with limits. Some products combine them, starting users on a trial of the top plan and dropping them to a free plan if they do not upgrade.

Example

Being upfront about the card

Hypothetical podcast hosting service Sparrowgill adds a line beneath its trial button: card required, charged after 14 days, cancel in one click from settings, with a reminder email before billing. Fewer people start trials, so the team tracks paid conversions and refund requests too, not just signups.

Common mistakes

Measuring only trial starts

More trials that never activate or pay are not progress. Track activation and paid conversion by trial cohort.

No end-of-trial reminder

Charging users who forgot about a trial generates chargebacks and bad reviews. Send a reminder before billing.

Questions

Long enough for a typical user to reach the product's key value. That depends on setup time and how often the product is used, so base it on your own activation data.
