Sampling means a report is built from part of the data and the results are extrapolated to the whole. Analytics tools sample when a query would otherwise be too expensive or slow. In GA4, standard reports are generally unsampled, while explorations and some API queries can be sampled when they exceed a quota. Sampled numbers are estimates, so precise questions need unsampled sources.
Where sampling happens in GA4
GA4's standard reports use aggregated tables and are not sampled. Explorations query event-level data and are sampled when a query covers more events than the property's quota allows, which is far higher on GA4 360 than on standard properties. The interface shows a sampling indicator, often a colored icon near the report title, with the share of data used.
Google documents the current quota in its help center. It has changed over time, so check it rather than relying on a figure from an old article.
How to avoid or reduce it
Most sampling issues can be solved without paying for a bigger plan.
- Shorten the date range and stitch periods together
- Use a standard report or customized report when it can answer the question
- Reduce the number of dimensions and segments in the exploration
- Query the raw BigQuery export, which is unsampled
When sampled data is fine
For direction and proportion, such as which landing pages lead a funnel, a high sampling rate is usually acceptable. For financial reporting, small segments or precise comparisons, use unsampled data.
Example
A segment too small for sampling
Suppose Corvidpath, a localization platform, explores enterprise visitors from a single country over a year. The exploration is sampled, and that segment is a small slice of the sample, so its numbers swing every time the report is refreshed. The team reruns the query in BigQuery for an exact count.
Common mistakes
Not noticing the indicator
Sampling is easy to miss. Check for it before sharing any exploration figures.
Comparing a sampled exploration with a standard report
Differences may come from sampling, not from real change.
Questions
Looker Studio pulls from the GA4 API, which has its own limits and quotas. It does not automatically avoid sampling or thresholds.
