Category Creation

A strategy of defining a new market category, naming a problem buyers have not framed yet, so the company that creates it becomes the default choice.

Also called: category design, new category

Category creation is a positioning strategy in which a company defines and names a new market category rather than competing inside an existing one. The aim is to frame a problem in a new way, teach the market that the problem exists, and become the reference vendor for it. It can produce strong differentiation, but it is slow and expensive, because the market has to learn a new idea first.

Why companies try it

Competing inside an established category means being compared on the incumbent's terms, often on a feature checklist. A new category changes the comparison. If buyers accept that the problem is different, the incumbents' strengths may matter less.

The risk is that buyers do not accept the new frame, or that the category name never catches on, leaving the company with a label nobody searches for.

The search problem with new categories

A new category has little or no search volume at first, because people cannot search for a name they have never heard. That means category creators usually need two search strategies at once.

  • Problem-led content that captures people searching for the symptoms the new category solves, in the words they already use.
  • Category-defining content, such as a definitive explainer, that ranks as the name starts to be searched and that third parties can cite.
  • Comparison content against the old ways of solving the problem, so buyers understand why the new approach is different.

Signals that a category is forming

Signs include rising search interest in the category name, analysts or publications using the term, competitors adopting the label, and AI assistants describing the category when asked. None of these is guaranteed, and many attempted categories never become widely used.

Example

Naming a problem before the category exists

Hypothetical company Rivetmoor builds software that tracks which internal documents are out of date. Nobody searches for its proposed category name, so its first content targets problems people already describe: outdated wikis, conflicting process documents and onboarding guides that no longer match the product.

Alongside that, it publishes one thorough explainer of the category idea and links to it from every problem page, so the term has a clear source if it gains traction.

Common mistakes

Inventing a category to avoid competition

If buyers see the product as a variation of something they already know, a new label will not change that. Category creation needs a genuinely different problem frame.

Only targeting the new term

Content aimed solely at a category name with no search demand will not be found. Pair it with problem-led content people already search for.

Questions

It depends on whether the problem is truly new and whether the company can afford a long education effort. Many startups do better positioning as a better option within a known category first.
