Win Rate

The share of sales opportunities that end in a signed deal. A core sales metric that also reflects lead quality, positioning and competitive strength.

Also called: close rate, opportunity win rate

Win rate is the percentage of closed sales opportunities that were won. It reflects sales execution, but also how well marketing targets the right buyers, how strong the positioning is against competitors, and whether pricing fits the market. Most teams track it overall, by segment, by competitor and by lead source.

How to calculate it

Use only opportunities that have closed, either won or lost, in the period. Including open deals understates the rate. Decide whether deals lost to “no decision” count as losses; many teams track them separately, because they point to a different problem than losing to a competitor.

Win rate = won opportunities ÷ (won opportunities + lost opportunities)

Example: 30 won ÷ (30 won + 90 lost) = 25%

Useful breakdowns

Each breakdown narrows the sample, so watch for small numbers before drawing conclusions.

  • By lead source: does inbound from search win more often than outbound?
  • By competitor: which competitors do you beat, and which beat you?
  • By segment and deal size: where does the product fit best?
  • By first content touched: do buyers who read comparison pages win at a different rate?

Win rate and content

Lost-deal reasons are one of the best inputs for content planning. If deals are lost because buyers believe a competitor integrates with a tool that you also support, an integration page and a clearer comparison page address that directly. Win rate by competitor tells you which comparison and alternatives pages to prioritize and what they need to say.

Example

Win rate by source

Hypothetical company Quarrybank finds, over a year of illustrative data, that opportunities whose first touch was an organic comparison page close at a higher rate than those from paid social, though at lower volume. It keeps both channels but stops judging them on lead count alone.

Common mistakes

Excluding early-stage losses

If deals that die in discovery are never marked lost, win rate looks better than it is. Close out stale opportunities.

Questions

They are related but not the same. Win rate covers sales opportunities that reached a decision. Conversion rate usually refers to an earlier step, such as visitors becoming leads or trials becoming paid.
