Synthetic content is any media produced by a generative AI model. It covers AI-written articles, generated images, cloned voices, AI video and synthetic datasets used to train other models. It is now common in marketing workflows. Search engines and AI platforms generally judge it by quality, accuracy and intent rather than by how it was produced, but disclosure rules, provenance standards and spam policies all apply to it.
Where it shows up in SaaS marketing
Most teams use generative AI somewhere: first drafts, outlines, meta descriptions, translations, social images, product illustrations or video voiceovers. The risks come from accuracy, sameness and scale. AI drafts can contain errors stated confidently. They tend toward generic phrasing. And they make it cheap to publish far more pages than a team can check.
- Text: drafts, summaries, FAQs, localization
- Images: illustrations, backgrounds, mockups
- Audio and video: voiceovers, avatars, edited clips
- Data: synthetic examples for testing or training
Signals and standards that apply
Search engines focus on whether content is helpful and whether it was produced at scale to manipulate rankings. Separately, provenance tools are emerging to show how media was made: invisible watermarks embedded by some AI generators, and content credentials attached as signed metadata. Neither is universal, and both can be stripped or lost when files are edited or re-encoded.
For product imagery in particular, generated visuals that misrepresent what the product does create trust and legal risks.
Example
Using AI with a human check
Bramblegate, a fictional HR platform, uses a model to draft help articles from release notes. Each draft goes to the product manager for the feature, who checks every claim against the live product and adds a real screenshot. The model saves drafting time; the review keeps the articles accurate enough for customers and for the AI assistants that will quote them.
Common mistakes
Publishing unreviewed drafts
Errors on your own site are costly, because AI systems may treat your site as the authority on your product.
Using generated images of the product UI
If it does not match the real product, it misleads buyers and confuses image understanding.
Questions
No detector is fully reliable, and false positives are common, especially on short or formulaic text. Do not base important decisions on detector scores alone.
Synthetic data usually means generated datasets used for training or testing. It is a subset of the broader idea of AI-generated material.
