Query Fan-Out

Query fan-out is when an AI search system splits one question into many related searches, runs them together and combines the results into one answer.

Query fan-out is a retrieval technique in which an AI search system breaks a user's question into several subqueries, searches for each, and merges what it finds into a single response. Google has named the technique as part of how AI Mode and AI Overviews work, and other AI search tools show similar behavior when they run several searches before answering. It means the pages used in an answer are not limited to those that rank for the original wording.

How it works

Take a question like “what's the best CRM for a 10-person B2B sales team that uses Gmail and needs good reporting?” A fan-out system might search separately for CRMs for small teams, CRM Gmail integrations, CRM reporting features, CRM pricing for small teams and comparisons between leading options. Each search returns its own set of pages. The model then reads across them and writes one answer.

Some tools show their searches as they work, which is a useful window into the subqueries. Others do not expose them.

What it means for SaaS content

Fan-out rewards depth across a topic. A company that has a clear page for each integration, each core use case, each competitor comparison and its pricing has more chances to be retrieved for some part of a complex question than one with a single broad product page.

It also means classic keyword research still matters. The subqueries look a lot like the long-tail searches people already type, so pages that rank for those are well placed to be pulled in.

How to plan for it

You cannot see a system's full list of subqueries, but you can approximate them.

  • Write down the realistic multi-part questions a buyer asks, then break each into the facts needed to answer it.
  • Check that each fact is stated plainly on some page of your site.
  • Watch tools that display their search steps, and note the queries they run.
  • Use People Also Ask and related searches as clues to adjacent questions.

Example

A fictional email marketing tool

Sendcraft, a made-up email platform for ecommerce, maps the question “best email tool for a Shopify store doing subscriptions”. The likely subtopics are Shopify integration, subscription app integrations, automation flows, pricing by list size and alternatives to the market leader. Sendcraft has strong pages for the first three but nothing on pricing by list size. It adds a plain pricing table by contact count, closing the gap.

Common mistakes

Targeting only the full question

Pages written for one long, exact question miss the subqueries that actually do the retrieving.

Spinning thin pages for every variation

Fan-out does not call for hundreds of near-identical pages. One solid page per distinct subtopic is enough.

Questions

Google has described it for AI Mode and AI Overviews. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude often run several searches per question as well, though their exact methods are not fully documented.

Sometimes. Some tools show the searches they ran. Google does not report fan-out queries to site owners in Search Console.

Know the terms. Now win the searches.

We find the searches your buyers make, then build, publish and improve the pages that win them.
