QAPage Schema

QAPage schema marks up a page built around one user-submitted question and its answers, as on community forums and support Q&A sites.

Also called: Q&A structured data, QAPage markup

QAPage is a Schema.org WebPage subtype for pages focused on a single question with answers, usually contributed by users. The markup uses a Question as mainEntity with answerCount and acceptedAnswer or suggestedAnswer items. Google has used it for a Q&A rich result that previews the question and top answers. It is distinct from FAQPage, which is for site-written question lists.

QAPage versus FAQPage versus forums

  • QAPage: one question per page, answered by users, possibly with an accepted answer
  • FAQPage: many questions, each answered once by the site owner
  • DiscussionForumPosting: open-ended threads that are not structured as a question with answers

Markup outline

The Question carries name, text, answerCount, author and datePosted. Each Answer has text, author, upvoteCount and url. Google's guidelines require that users can submit answers on the page, and that the markup is not used for content the site itself wrote as FAQs.

Feature status

Google has trimmed several structured data features in recent years. Check the Search Gallery for whether the Q&A result is still listed before treating it as a target. The markup remains an accurate description of community Q&A content either way.

Example

A developer community

Saltmere, an API platform, runs a community Q&A site where developers ask and answer questions. Each question page uses QAPage markup generated by the community platform, with the answer marked accepted by the original poster flagged as acceptedAnswer.

Common mistakes

Using QAPage for FAQ pages

If the site wrote both questions and answers and users cannot add answers, QAPage is the wrong type.

Questions

Only if it is a single question that users can answer. A staff-written help article is better described as an Article.
