Pageview

A pageview is one load of a page in a browser, recorded by analytics. GA4 records it as a page_view event and reports it under the Views metric.

Also called: Page view, Views, page_view

A pageview is recorded each time a page is loaded or, on single-page applications, each time the URL changes in a way your tag is set up to track. In GA4 pageviews are page_view events, and reports show them as Views alongside screen views from apps. Pageviews measure exposure, not people: one visitor refreshing a page five times creates five pageviews.

How GA4 collects pageviews

The Google tag sends a page_view event on each page load by default. With enhanced measurement turned on, it can also send page_view when the browser history changes, which covers many single-page applications built with React, Vue or similar frameworks. If your app changes routes without updating history, you need to send page_view events manually.

gtag('event', 'page_view', {
  page_title: 'Pricing',
  page_location: 'https://example.com/pricing'
});

Views versus users and sessions

Views tell you how often a page was seen. Users tell you how many people saw it. Views per user is a quick measure of revisits, which is useful for documentation and help center pages that customers return to.

Common causes of bad pageview data

Double counting is the most common error.

  • Google tag installed twice, once in code and once through Google Tag Manager
  • History-change pageviews firing in addition to manual route-change pageviews
  • Preview and staging environments sending data to the production property
  • Query parameters creating many URL variants of the same page in reports

Example

A single-page app that undercounted

Imagine Harborquill, a CRM for agencies, rebuilds its marketing site as a client-rendered app. Views drop sharply after launch while sign-ups hold steady. Route changes were not updating browser history, so only the first page of each visit was counted. Sending page_view on each route change restored accurate counts.

Common mistakes

Reporting pageviews as audience size

Pageviews count loads, not people. Use users for reach.

Not checking after a front-end migration

Framework changes often break or duplicate pageview tracking. Compare views per session before and after launch.
