NAP Consistency

NAP consistency means a business's name, address and phone number match everywhere they appear online, which helps local search trust the data.

Also called: NAP, name address phone, NAP+W

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. NAP consistency is the practice of making sure those details are identical, or as close as possible, across your website, Google Business Profile, directories, maps and social profiles. Search engines combine information from many sources to understand a local business, and conflicting details can create confusion, duplicate listings or wrong information shown to customers.

Why it matters

Google says prominence in local results draws on information it has about a business from across the web. When a business has moved, changed its phone number or rebranded, old details can persist in directories for years. Consistent data makes it easier for search systems to match those mentions to the right business and for customers to reach it.

How much small formatting differences matter, such as “Suite” versus “Ste”, is not documented. Material differences, like an old address or a dead phone number, are the real problem.

Where to check

Start with the sources you control, then work outward to the places that copy your data.

  • Your website footer, contact page and structured data
  • Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect
  • Bing Places
  • Major directories and review sites in your industry
  • Social profiles such as LinkedIn
  • Data aggregators that feed other directories

Cleaning up after a move

Update the primary sources first: your site, your Business Profile, Apple and Bing. Then update major directories and aggregators. Keep a spreadsheet of each listing, its login and its status, so the next change is easier.

Example

An office move without lost listings

Hypothetical consulting arm of software company Pinecradle moves offices. Before the move date, the team prepares updates for every listing in its tracking sheet, updates the website and LocalBusiness structured data on moving day, and checks a week later that the new address shows on Maps.

Common mistakes

Using tracking numbers inconsistently

Call tracking numbers on directories can conflict with your main number. Use the main number as primary and add tracking numbers only where the platform supports secondary numbers.

Questions

Much less. It matters for businesses with local listings. For online-only companies, consistent brand information still helps entity understanding, but local citations are not a priority.
