Marketing-Qualified Lead

A lead that marketing judges ready for sales attention, based on fit and engagement such as content downloads, form fills or repeat visits.

Also called: MQL

A marketing-qualified lead is a contact that meets the criteria marketing has agreed with sales for passing a lead on. The criteria usually combine fit, such as job title and company size, with engagement, such as downloading content, attending a webinar or visiting the pricing page. MQLs are a standard stage in sales-led funnels, sitting between raw leads and sales-qualified leads.

How MQLs are defined

Most companies use a lead scoring model in their marketing automation or CRM system. Points are added for fit attributes and engagement actions, and a lead becomes an MQL when it passes a threshold. Some companies skip scoring and treat certain actions, such as a demo request, as an automatic MQL.

Criticism of the MQL

MQL targets can push marketing toward volume over quality. Gating content to collect contact details produces many MQLs from people who wanted a document, not a conversation. When sales ignores most MQLs, the metric has stopped measuring anything useful.

In response, some teams report on qualified pipeline or sales-accepted opportunities instead, or on account-level qualification when several people from the same company engage.

Organic search and MQLs

Search traffic produces MQLs mainly through demo requests, contact forms, gated content and newsletter sign-ups. To judge pages fairly, track what share of MQLs from each page become sales-qualified and then opportunities. A page with fewer MQLs but a higher conversion to opportunity can be more valuable than one with many.

Example

Separating high-intent from low-intent MQLs

Hypothetical company Ironleaf counts both ebook downloads and demo requests as MQLs. Its sales team complains about lead quality. Splitting the data shows demo requests from comparison and pricing pages convert to opportunities far more often than ebook downloads from top-of-funnel posts. It keeps both, but routes ebook leads into nurture instead of directly to sales.

Common mistakes

Setting MQL targets without quality checks

Volume targets alone reward low-quality leads. Pair MQL counts with MQL-to-SQL conversion.

Never revisiting the criteria

Review the definition with sales regularly using closed-won data.

Questions

Some do for their sales-assisted segment, but most rely more on product-qualified leads, since product usage is a stronger signal than marketing engagement.
