Guest post spam is the abuse of guest posting for link building: articles written to carry links rather than to inform readers, placed on sites that publish almost anything, often for a fee. Google's spam policies list large-scale article and guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor links as link spam, and the sites that run these programs are often called guest post farms.
How to recognize it
Guest post spam has a recognizable look from both sides.
- "Write for us" pages that accept any topic and quote a price
- Blogs whose recent posts cover unrelated subjects, each with a commercial link
- Generic articles with one keyword-rich link to a product or pricing page
- Author bios that change every post with no real people behind them
- Outreach emails offering guaranteed placements on a list of sites
Why it does not hold up
Google says its systems aim to neutralize links from this kind of campaign, and manual actions for unnatural links often trace back to it. Beyond policy, the host sites typically have little real readership, so the posts send almost no visitors and do nothing for your brand. If the links are discounted, the spend has bought nothing.
If you have a history of it
Stop the program, list the placements, and ask hosts to remove the links or add nofollow where you can. If you have a manual action, or a large paid program that makes one likely, disavow the remaining domains and keep records. Then redirect the budget to content or PR that earns links on its merits.
Example
An agency's monthly package
An illustrative fleet management SaaS, Routecairn, pays an agency for "ten guest posts a month". A review shows the posts sit on general blogs with no visible audience, each linking to Routecairn's pricing page with the anchor "best fleet management software". Routecairn ends the contract and asks the agency for the full placement list for cleanup.
Common mistakes
Calling paid placements guest posts
If you pay for publication and the link is followed, it is a paid link, whatever the label.
Reusing the same anchor text
Identical commercial anchors across many posts make the pattern obvious.
