First-click attribution

First-click attribution gives all credit for a conversion to the first recorded interaction in the customer's path, such as an organic search visit.

Also called: First-touch attribution

First-click attribution is a model that assigns 100% of the credit for a conversion to the first touchpoint the analytics tool recorded. It highlights the channels that introduce people to a product, which often flatters SEO and content. Google removed first click and other rule-based models from GA4 attribution reports in 2023, but first-touch analysis is still common in CRMs, product analytics tools and BigQuery-based reporting.

How it works

If a buyer first arrives from an organic blog post, later clicks a paid search ad, then signs up through an email link, first-click gives all credit to organic search. Everything after the first touch gets nothing.

First touch in GA4 today

GA4 no longer offers first click as a selectable attribution model. It does keep user-scoped dimensions such as First user source, medium and default channel group, which record how each user was first acquired. Reports built on those dimensions give a first-touch view of acquisition, within the limits of cookie lifetime and identity.

Strengths and blind spots

First-click is useful for asking which channels start relationships. It ignores everything that helped close them and depends heavily on the tracking window: if the true first touch happened before cookies were set or on another device, the recorded first touch is wrong.

  • Good for: evaluating awareness and top-of-funnel content
  • Weak for: long B2B cycles across devices and people
  • Sensitive to: cookie loss, consent and dark traffic

Example

Crediting the guide that started it

Imagine Tamarisk, a data warehouse SaaS, stores the first-touch source on each account in its CRM. A first-touch report shows many enterprise deals began with a technical guide found through organic search, though most of those deals closed after sales outreach. The team uses this to defend investment in technical content, while noting the model gives sales no credit.

Common mistakes

Using one model for every decision

First-click answers one question. Compare it with last-click and data-driven views.

Trusting the first touch for long cycles

Cookies expire and people switch devices. The recorded first touch may be the third real one.

Questions

Google said rule-based models other than last click had low usage and pointed users to data-driven attribution. It removed first click, linear, time decay and position-based models in 2023.
