Expansion revenue is the increase in recurring revenue from customers you already have. It comes from upselling to higher plans, cross-selling add-on products, adding seats and growth in usage-based billing. Because there is no acquisition cost for a customer who already pays, expansion is usually the most efficient form of growth a SaaS company has.
Sources of expansion
Report each source separately where you can. A price increase and a customer choosing to add seats say very different things about product value.
- Seat expansion: more users join the account.
- Tier upgrades: the customer moves to a plan with more features or higher limits.
- Add-ons: separately priced modules or products.
- Usage growth: higher billing under usage-based pricing.
- Price increases on renewal, which some companies report separately.
What drives expansion
Expansion usually follows adoption. Customers expand when more people use the product, when they depend on it for more of their work, or when they hit a limit that blocks something they want to do. Packaging matters: limits should sit where a growing customer naturally reaches them, not where they frustrate new users.
Content's role in expansion
Search and content are usually discussed as acquisition channels, but existing customers search too. Help documentation, advanced guides and integration pages that existing users find through search can introduce features and add-ons they did not know about. Measuring that effect requires linking content views to logged-in accounts, which many companies do in product analytics rather than in web analytics.
Example
An integration drives an add-on
Hypothetical company Ashcombe Data sells a reporting tool with a paid data warehouse connector. Its documentation on syncing data to warehouses ranks for several integration queries. Product analytics show that logged-in customers who read those pages are more likely to start the connector trial, and the team adds clearer upgrade prompts there.
Common mistakes
Forcing upsells too early
Pushing upgrades before customers have reached value can increase churn. Tie expansion prompts to real usage milestones.
Questions
Usually not. CAC measures the cost of new customers. Some companies track a separate cost of expansion, mainly the account management and sales time spent on upsells.
