Event Schema

Event schema describes an event's name, date, location and tickets, and can make webinars, conferences and meetups eligible for Google's event features.

Also called: Event structured data, Webinar schema

Event is the Schema.org type for something that happens at a particular time and place, physical or online. Google uses Event markup for an event experience in search that lists upcoming events with dates and locations. Google requires name, startDate and location, and supports online events through eventAttendanceMode and a VirtualLocation.

Online events and webinars

For a webinar, set eventAttendanceMode to OnlineEventAttendanceMode and use a VirtualLocation with the registration or watch URL as location. Use eventStatus to mark changes: EventScheduled, EventPostponed, EventRescheduled, EventCancelled or EventMovedOnline.

What Google does not want marked up

Google's guidelines exclude things that are not really events: coupons or limited-time offers, business hours, and on-demand recordings that have no start time. A recorded webinar library is better described with VideoObject.

Availability

Google's event experience is not available in every country or language, and Google can change where it appears. Check the documentation for current coverage before forecasting any effect.

Example

A webinar series

Brambleton, a revenue forecasting SaaS, runs monthly live webinars. Each registration page carries Event markup with the start time in UTC, an online attendance mode, a free Offer and the organizer. After each session, the page is converted into an on-demand video page and the Event markup is replaced with VideoObject.

Common mistakes

Leaving markup on past events

Expired events with live markup clutter reports and mislead users. Update or remove it after the event.

Time zones missing

A startDate without a time zone can show the wrong time. Use full ISO 8601 with an offset.

Questions

Not if it has no scheduled time. Use VideoObject for on-demand content.
