Clickstream Data

Clickstream data is anonymized browsing activity from user panels. SEO tools use it, alongside other inputs, to estimate search volumes and clicks per keyword.

Also called: Clickstream, Panel data

Clickstream data records the sequence of pages and searches a group of internet users visit, collected from panels, browser extensions, apps or data partners and then anonymized. Third-party SEO tools combine it with Google Ads data and their own models to estimate search volume, clicks per search and traffic to websites. Knowing that these estimates rest on sampled data helps explain why tools disagree and why small keywords often show no volume.

How tools use it

Google does not provide exact organic search volumes or click data for the web as a whole. Tools fill the gap by modeling. Clickstream panels show what a sample of users searched and clicked, which tools scale up to estimate totals. That data also feeds metrics like clicks per search, the share of searches with no click, and estimated traffic to competitor sites.

Limits and caveats

Panels cover a sample, which may skew toward certain devices, countries or user types. Small B2B searches are especially poorly represented because few panel members make them. Vendors rarely disclose their sources in detail, and the market has changed over time: one widely used provider, Jumpshot, shut down in 2020 after privacy criticism. Treat any estimate that depends on clickstream as directional.

  • Sampling bias toward certain users and devices
  • Weak coverage of rare and specialized searches
  • Opaque sourcing and methodology
  • Privacy and consent concerns over how data is collected

Better sources for your own site

For your own pages, Search Console shows real impressions and clicks from Google, and your analytics shows what visitors did after arriving. Use clickstream-based estimates for competitors and market sizing, where nothing better is available.

Example

Explaining two different numbers

Imagine Sablecroft, a fictional legal tech company, finds that two keyword tools disagree widely on the volume for its main category term. Neither is wrong in its own terms: each blends different data sources and models.

Sablecroft uses one tool consistently for comparisons and checks its own Search Console impressions for the term as a reality check.

Common mistakes

Treating estimates as measured

Volumes and traffic estimates built on panels are modeled. Use them for comparison, not reporting.

Questions

Google does not offer a clickstream product for organic search. Its own data for site owners comes through Search Console and, for ads, Keyword Planner.
