Ad Fatigue

Ad fatigue is the drop in performance when the same audience sees the same ad too often: clicks and conversions fall while costs per result rise.

Also called: creative fatigue, audience fatigue

Ad fatigue happens when people have seen an ad enough times that they stop noticing or start ignoring it. It is most common on social and display channels with small audiences, which is typical of B2B targeting. The usual signs are rising frequency, falling click-through rate and climbing cost per result.

How to spot it

  • Frequency (average impressions per person) climbing week over week.
  • Click-through rate declining on an ad that used to perform.
  • Cost per click, CPM or cost per result rising without a change in bids.
  • More negative feedback or hides, where the platform reports them.

Fixing it

Refresh creative before it fully fades, ideally with new angles rather than new colors. Widen the audience if it is very small, or rotate several ads so no single one carries the load. Frequency caps, where the platform offers them, limit how often one person sees your ads.

For B2B, a small audience of target accounts will tire faster than a broad consumer audience. Planning a creative calendar, with new concepts on a regular schedule, is cheaper than reacting after results collapse.

When it is not fatigue

Falling performance can also come from seasonality, a competitor entering the auction, tracking breaking or the audience simply being exhausted of buyers. Check those before swapping creative.

Example

A creative calendar

Hypothetical company Bellmoss runs LinkedIn ads to a list of a few thousand target accounts. After seeing frequency climb and click-through rate slide within weeks, it plans three new concepts per month and retires the weakest ad each time a new one launches.

Common mistakes

Only changing the headline

Minor tweaks rarely reset attention. Change the idea, format or visual.
